Design for constrained productivity

Our customer centered approach has taught us that every new design project should start with asking the question who the users are. It often seems obvious and straightforward to identify a primary group of users and we stop there. And as if this is not hard enough, but we sometimes have the task to design aiming for productivity but at the same time putting a number of constraints to assure that the final outcome will deliver the desired user experience. For such products there is often a secondary user group and if ignored usually all the work is in vain. In my talk I will share how I have identified this secondary user group for projects that I worked on and how that has impacted my design decisions thereafter. I will walk you through the way we have prioritized features for our products and how we are continuously applying the Pareto principle. I will also talk about two approaches for choosing the best default configurations for a feature or a set of features. And since all of this is impossible unless you have the developers’ support I will also share how I have managed to win them on the bright side of UX. Meanwhile we will also prepare cookies to illustrate the whole process in a more easy to “digest” manner.

Choose their destiny

As designers, we choose how long and complicated a user experience for an app is. Based on our choices, our users could perform their tasks like a breeze, or they might suffocate in an entangled net of countless features, screens and processes.
In this short talk, we’ll be looking into optimizing their journey by making sane hard choices.
Our focus is at mobile apps, but we’ll be drawing examples from life, cinematography and 500 year old quotes.

The WHYs and HOWs of including the users in the process

Nowadays, UX is a buzzword and user experience is something every IT specialist has, at least, heard about. UX is being increasingly added to job titles and company values with and without reason. But what is user experience without the users? Can you deliver a great solution for someone without ever considering that someone's perspective? Unfortunately, it is more often omitted during project life cycles than not.
In this talk, we will discuss WHY including the users in the production process is so important and HOW they can be included even in projects that have limited budgets or short timelines. We will combine the abstract glory of user research with practical methods for including actual users in your projects that you can personally apply in order to achieve innovative and successful solutions.

Multi threaded JS applications in the browser.

Web browsers and JavaScript have been evolving together for some time. Now both allow us to do applications that just wasn't possible just a few years ago. Have you ever been at a place where your heavy business logic needs to take place on the client? Maybe a game inside the web browser? In this talk I am going to cover Web Workers. They allow you to do things like fire up long-running scripts to handle computationally intensive tasks, but without blocking the UI or other scripts to handle user interactions. What are they good for? Try these for example:
- Prefetching and/or caching data
- Intensive strings operations
- Analyzing video or audio data
- Background I/O or polling of webservices
- Handle large arrays or JSON responses
- Image manipulations in <canvas>
- Updating local web database
In addition: we are going to cover the difference between Service and Web worker; and have a few demos of simple implementations of web workers. Welcome to a multi-threaded web! Deadlocks may or may not be part of your experience :)
